Awake Peer Support Worker – Piri Pono, Silverdale

We have a vacancy for a full-time position, 40 hours, 5 shifts per week, at Piri Pono, our Silverdale Service. The position is for an Awake Peer Support Worker,

Peer support is a challenging role, which requires tenacity, resilience and a sense of humour. It is also a rewarding role where you can use your own experience of mental health to make a difference in the lives of others. As role model and peer, you will be inspiring hope through sharing your own story of recovery with those who are looking at moving towards different choices and options in their lives.

The role of Peer Support Worker will require of you to build a relationship with others based on a common experience of recovery from mental distress. The relationship fosters mutual learning and growth and is strongly focused on supporting people to make positive changes in their lives.

We are looking for people who:
Are mature, patient and respectful
Have experienced mental distress and recovery themselves and can act as role model to others
Have strong cultural competencies in working within different cultures
Have good communication and active listening skills Are positive and encouraging and have a good sense of humour
Are willling and able to work rostered shifts
Will hang in there when the going gets tough and are resilient and assertive
Are critical and reflective thinkers
Are able to work in an ethical framework
Have computer skills (especially e-mail and word processing)
We will support to complete Peer Employment Training and/or completed Intentional Peer Support Training (IPS)
Have a full NZ drivers licence

Community Support Workers

Client support work at its most rewarding – manageable caseload, no wasted travel, great teamwork, truly pioneering programmes, based in homely locations.

Connect Supporting Recovery is an established NGO providing recovery focused mental health care service throughout Auckland and Hamilton, with $10million revenues and FTE staff numbers of 170.

A long, strong history of successful growth has resulted in 5 residential and respite facilities, several mobile community teams, assisted employment and housing agencies. There is a mix of peer-led, non-peer, dual diagnosis and collaborative services, including a fledgling but vibrant social enterprise.

We have a two full time positions available (40hrs) in our Community Support team. This team is supportive and rich in diversity we welcome new people into the team with open arms. The position may require weekend work.

We’d love to hear from those who can comfortably demonstrate:

• National Certificate or Diploma in Mental Health Support or a relevant qualification equivalent there of.
• A client-centred, recovery focused approach.
• Insight to know when and how to engage with Whanau.
• Experience, instinct and decency to be appropriately culturally sensitive.
• Mountains of empathy with a few peaks of resilience and firmness.
• A full driver’s license.
• A working knowledge of MS Office.

Applicants must share the teams’ deep belief in holistic, face to face, participative and highly inventive recovery based approaches. A sense of fun, team spirit and openness will complement a fine balance of positivity and pragmatism.

Above all, we are looking for those who can embrace the breadth and variety of the role, which ranges from basic practical help to pioneering therapeutic support.
